I can’t imagine staying anyplace else while visiting Morro Bay. Our ocean view room was spacious and updated; there were all the amenities we needed to be very comfortable, and we got the best sleep of our lives on the comfy bed. The hyper local focus continues in the actual back yard, where vegetables, herbs, and fruit are grown organically and sustainably before making the short journey from the garden to the kitchen. All ingredients are sourced from within a 50 mile radius, truly representative of the area they are grown in and redolent of their native terroir. The location was perfect for us.

Almost the entire menu is vegan, which made me nervous about flavor. Zesty flavors, deployed with wit. Portions are smaller than Southern cooks favor, but I came away full enough. Get there early or expect a line; it doesn’t accept reservations. This world class restaurant is housed in a century-old former private residence made of local redwood.

The location can’t be beaten; the friendly staff recommended some great restaurants, and our room was beautiful. We enjoyed walking to several of the nearby places we wanted to see. Klamath River Overlook, at the end of Requa Road in Klamath, offers the region’s best and broadest view of the river as it empties into the sea. From that overlook, you can hike a steep trail (one mile down and back) that takes you toward the water.
